What are you doing in your classroom or home? I think it would be great to see what others are doing to exchange some ideas. I am constantly looking for new activities to do and I know others are too.
This is what I plan on doing with my first grade CCD class:
Review-
• Review - Sign of the Cross, Grace Before Meals, Glory Be, Our Father (Lord’s Prayer)
• Review- Last week’s Take Home Sheet
• Review- People at Mass using People at Church Cards.
• Review- Liturgical Objects at Mass (pew, stoup, altar, chalice, ciborium, Body of Christ, Blood of Christ, tabernacle, bells, lectern, ambo, Lectionary, missal, Book of the Gospels, Processional Cross, cruets, Presider’s/Celebrant’s Chair, Sanctuary Lamp, Sacramentary) using Liturgical Objects Used at Mass Cards.
Celebrating the Mass Lesson-
Holy Communion
After giving the Holy Communion to the deacon, the Eucharistic Ministers, and altar servers the congregation may receive Holy Communion.
We stay kneeled until it is time for us to receive Holy Communion. We then walk slowly with our hands folded as we make our way to the priest or Eucharistic Minister.
First graders have not received first Holy Communion, hold your arms across your chest (demonstrate this)when you approach the priest to receive a blessing. After receiving a blessing, follow the line and walk back to your seat and kneel to pray or for meditation.
Then priest may return to his chair and when he sits down the people can sit down. If appropriate, a sacred silence may be observed for a while, or a hymn may be sung.
Questions:
What do we do until it is time for us to receive Holy Communion? (We kneel.)
What do you do if you have not received first Holy Communion? (Hold your arms across your chest when you approach the priest or Eucharistic Minister to receive a blessing.
What do you do after you have received the Body and Blood of Christ? (Follow the line and walk back to your seat and kneel to pray or for meditation.)
When can you sit down? (When the priest sits down.)
Celebrating the Mass Activities-
Introduce craft: Who gives out the Holy Eucharist to the people in church? (The priest and the Eucharistic Ministers.) Who is present in the Holy Eucharist? (Jesus)
Jesus in the Holy Eucharist Craft
*This is an adaptation of catholiccollector.blogspot.com craft. This blog and craft have been removed.
1. Print out host template. Cut out and fold host so that it opens like a door with the picture of Jesus inside.
2. Print out template of chalice. Cut out template. Fold a yellow piece of construction paper in half and put the flat side of the chalice template on the folded edge. Trace around template and cut out. When you open it you will have a complete chalice. Be sure to draw in the top part of the chalice.
3. Glue chalice to your background paper and let your child decorate it with crayons, markers, plastic jewels, sequins, etc.
4. Glue host above the chalice making sure the door opens the correct way. You can also draw a cross on the outside of the host.

Lesson Plan-
Road to Emmaus and Thomas the Doubter and go over vocabulary words with students. Read story: “Road to Emmaus and Thomas the Doubter” The Usborne Children's Bible by Heather Amery and ask questions from Take Home Sheet that will be sent home today and the questions below. Note: When I read the story to the students I usually sit in the chair in the corner by the board and have the students sit on the floor in front of me. After the students have answered the questions about the story, I have them go back to their seats to continue with what is on the lesson plan (activity, craft, game, puzzles/worksheets, etc.).
Questions:
Who wouldn't believe that Jesus was alive until he saw the marks of the nails on Jesus' hands and feet, and touch the wound in Jesus' side? (Thomas)
When Thomas saw Jesus and saw his wounds did he believe it was Jesus? (Yes)
Craft- Introduce craft: What are the pretty windows in church called? (Stained glass windows.)

crafts.kaboose.com- I make this craft in the shape of a cross by folding one sheet of black construction paper in half and tracing a cross in the center on the top sheet. I then cut the cross out of both sheets of paper for the students. We then follow the rest of the directions given here.
Mini Book-
lambsongs.co.nz- “On the Road to Emmaus” by Jill Kemp
Have students read the mini book out loud in class by taking turns (each read a page) and take home to read to their parents. Students can also color mini book.
Game- Introduce game: Who did the two disciples not recognize? (Jesus)
Road to Emmaus File Folder Game- Be the first one to Emmaus and back to Jerusalem and win the game!
Puzzles & Worksheets- While students are doing puzzles/worksheets, etc. they may say a prayer. Students are asked to recite 5 prayers by the end of the year. A “We Know Our Prayers” chart is on the bulletin board. If the student can recite the prayer correctly, write the date on the chart, and they get to pick a prize from the prize bag.
sermons4kids.com- Road to Emmaus (maze)
Homework- Give each student a On the Road to Emmaus Take Home Sheet for their parents to go over with them to review what we have done in class. Parents need to help their child fill this out and bring back to class the following week. Students that complete their homework and bring it back to class will be able to play Homeworkopoly. Each Sunday the students make a mini story book and/or story wheel in class. Students need to read these to their parents (or the parents read to them) the mini book and/or story wheel for homework.
What will you do in your classroom or home? Please comment so I can add the link to your blog to this post. We would love to see what you do!
