What will you do in your classroom or home? (Class #25)

To contact us Click HERE

What are you doing in your classroom or home? I think it would be great to see what others are doing to exchange some ideas. I am constantly looking for new activities to do and I know others are too.

This is what I plan on doing with my first grade CCD class:

Review-

• Review - Sign of the Cross, Grace Before Meals, Glory Be, Our Father (Lord’s Prayer)

• Review- Last week’s Take Home Sheet

• Review- People at Mass using People at Church Cards.

• Review- Liturgical Objects at Mass (pew, stoup, altar, chalice, ciborium, Body of Christ, Blood of Christ, tabernacle, bells, lectern, ambo, Lectionary, missal, Book of the Gospels, Processional Cross, cruets, Presider’s/Celebrant’s Chair, Sanctuary Lamp, Sacramentary) using Liturgical Objects Used at Mass Cards.

Celebrating the Mass Lesson-

Final Blessing & Concluding Rite

Standing at the altar or at the chair and facing the people, with hands joined, the priest says:

Let us pray.

We all stand and pray in silence with the priest for a while, unless silence has just been observed. Then the priest, with hands extended, says the Prayer after Communion, at the end of which the people acclaim:

Amen.

If there are announcements to be made they are made at this time. If there is any other parish business to be taken care of, it usually will happen at this time as well.

Then the dismissal takes place. The priest, facing the people and extending his hands, says:

The Lord be with you.

People: And with your spirit.

The priest blesses the people, saying:

May almighty God bless you:
the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (The people make the Sign of the Cross when the priest says this.)

People: Amen.

Then the Deacon, or the Priest himself, with hands joined and facing the people, says:

Go forth, the Mass is ended.

Or:

Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.

Or:

Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.

Or:

Go in peace.

The people reply:

Thanks be to God.

Then the Priest venerates the altar as usual with a kiss, as at the beginning. After this he is joined by the other ministers in front of the altar, and after a brief moment they all bow toward the altar. While this is happening the congregation sings the final hymn. The ministers of the liturgy, minus the Book of the Gospels, now exit the church. The congregation should remain in their places until the end of the closing hymn.

When you leave your pew, be sure to genuflect and do the Sign of the Cross. Just before you leave the church bless yourself with Holy Water at the water font or stoup, making the Sign of the Cross.

*Then ask students questions from the lesson.

Celebrating the Mass Activity-

The activity below is free, however it can only to be used for classroom and personal use. It may not be published on any websites or other electronic media, or distributed in newsletters, bulletins, or any other form or sold for profit.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words Game- A fun review game about actions during Mass.

Lesson Plan-

Breakfast By the Lake and go over vocabulary words with students. Read story: “Breakfast By the Lake” The Usborne Children's Bible by Heather Amery and ask questions from Take Home Sheet that will be sent home today. Note: When I read the story to the students I usually sit in the chair in the corner by the board and have the students sit on the floor in front of me. After the students have answered the questions about the story, I have them go back to their seats to continue with what is on the lesson plan (activity, craft, game, puzzles/worksheets, etc.).

Story Wheel-

Breakfast at the Lake Story Wheel (Bible Wheels to Make and Enjoy by Carmen Sorvillo, page 59 & 60). Students are given the story wheel to color and put together. Then they turn their story wheel dial to retell the Bible story they learned over and over again.

Have students read the Story Wheel out loud in class by taking turns (each read a section) and take home to read to their parents.

Craft- What were the disciples doing when Jesus called out to them? (Fishing from their boat.)

Make a construction paper fish to play Flying Fish Relay

Games- Introduce game: How long did the disciples fish? (All night)

Flying Fish Relay- In this funny race, players frantically fan their fish across the room into a plate. (Great Big Book of Children’s Games by Debra Wise, page 177).

Breakfast By the Lake File Folder Game- In this game players must answer correctly questions about the Bible story to receive a fish to put on their plate. Be careful not to eat all your fish and have to put all of your fish back. The player that reaches FINISH with the most fish on their plate wins.

Puzzles & Worksheets- While students are doing puzzles/worksheets, etc. they may say a prayer. Students are asked to recite 5 prayers by the end of the year. A “We Know Our Prayers” chart is on the bulletin board. If the student can recite the prayer correctly, write the date on the chart, and they get to pick a prize from the prize bag.

Breakfast By the Lake (find the mistakes)- More 365 Activities for Kids on November 27

Homework- Give each student a Breakfast By the Lake Take Home Sheet for their parents to go over with them to review what we have done in class. Parents need to help their child fill this out and bring back to class the following week. Students that complete their homework and bring it back to class will be able to play Homeworkopoly. Each Sunday the students make a mini story book and/or story wheel in class. Students need to read these to their parents (or the parents read to them) the mini book and/or story wheel for homework.

The Bhagavad Gita's Primary Message

To contact us Click HERE
Welcome back, fans of Latin and Greek root words as they pertain to English vocabulary!  I and my colleagues in Portland, OR have just finished putting out our SAT and GRE vocabulary online learning system  that has been a labor of love.  Hence, I have a few moments to discuss yet another amazing text that I've just perused, The Bhagavad Gita as translated by Eknath Easwaran.  This Hindu/Yoga text, probably the most enlightening religious text I have yet to learn from, has one primary message in it that supersedes all others: The Freedom That Comes from Renunciation.  Let's first take a quick look at the Latin roots of the word "renunciation:"

re-:  from the Latin root "re" meaning "back, again."
nunciat:  from the Latin root word nuntio, nuntiare, nuntiavi, nuntiatus: "announce, report, send a message."  Thus, renunciation is the taking in of something, and sending it back out into the world, or not acquiring the desire for the "message" you want in the first place.  SAT and GRE English vocabulary words that come from this root include:  renounce, denounce, denunciation, enunciatem and annunciation.

The freedom that comes from renunciation is a simple concept, and it works like this.  In chapter two of the Bhagavad Gita, we find the following verse:

You have the right to work, but never to the
fruit of work.  You should never engage in action
for the sake of reward, nor should you long for
inaction.

This, to me, is almost the meaning of life itself.  Imagine that, if you were to do work with no selfish thoughts of what you were going to get out of it; that is, you renounce all results of the work, all that which you hope to gain from the work, such as material success, power, wealth, etc.  This would bring about a state of moksha, or freedom.  One would never have to worry again, scheme again, be disappointed again when things didn't work out.

In point of fact, Krishna, the Lord of Yoga in The Bhagavad Gita, tells Arjuna, his disciple, that those who do not desire or hanker for the fruit of their actions, the desired results, attain spiritual perfection, and in fact get everything they want.  Whereas those who strive and think only about what's in it for them gain, in the end, nothing but disappointment.  This renunciation of the fruit of action (note this is not giving up the action itself!) is, in Sanskrit, tyaga.  Imagine working selflessly.  And thereby freeing yourself from the bondage and pain that comes from lack of success (or sometimes even from success itself, which often brings about unintended entanglements in the swirling mass that is maya).

Namaste.

Interested in learning SAT or GRE English vocabulary that is taught to you so that you won't forget it?  Is that even possible?  It is through a fabulous Adaptive Memory Engine that is only available at membean.com.  Try it out for free ... you won't be sorry.  And it's fun!  Or, if your more into learning the Greek and Latin root words of English, check out www.wordempire.com for the most comprehensive Greek and Latin roots dictionary available today.

Rembrandt's painting "The return of the prodigal son"

To contact us Click HERE
You gotta love Rembrandt's painting, "The return of the prodigal son". That's the elder brother peeking around the column in the background.

Rembrandt-The return of the prodigal son

Henri Nouwen has a highly reviewed book about this painting and the parable behind it. I haven't yet read the book, but it seems to be about moving from being the prodigal son, to being the elder brother, to being the welcoming father.

Spotted license plate 000 NPE

To contact us Click HERE
The significance of this odd spotting will probably only make sense to computer programmers (NPE = Null Pointer Exception), but a few days ago, Mila and I were following an SUV with license plate 000 NPE, which is quite amusing. I don't think it is a customized vanity plate – here in British Columbia, license plates have three numbers followed by three letters, or three letters followed by three numbers. It could be a genuine coincidence.

New todo-list system: One-Minute Todo List

To contact us Click HERE
I was trying a todo-list system called SuperFocus, in which you keep your todos in a notebook, and you must do at least one item on each page before moving on to look at the items on the next page.

But I got frustrated with it because tonight I had 10 minutes to do something from my lists, and I had a ton of important stuff in the last few pages. But because I have to do at least one item on a page before moving to the next page, I was stuck a few pages back on: polish shoes.

That tells me that there is something wrong with this system.

So I'm trying yet another todo-list system. This one is called the One-Minute Todo List. Here is a link to the free e-book PDF. The basic idea is to have three lists:

  • Critical Now (stuff that must be done today). Max 5 items.
  • Opportunity Now (stuff to do within the next 10 days, when you get an opportunity). Max 20 items. Review daily.
  • Over-The-Horizon (stuff that could be done after 10 days). Unlimited items. Review weekly.
The third, unlimited list scares me a bit - it could get really huge. Anyway, we'll see how it goes.
One of the advantages of trying out a new to-do list system is that you can start with an empty list :-)

Make your own mini Moleskine notebook for (almost) free

To contact us Click HERE
Moleskine makes these nice mini notebooks that are so small you can slip them into your wallet. But they cost $10 for two. Here I'm going to show you how to make something pretty similar using materials you probably already have at home. All you need are:

  • a 3x5" writing pad
  • a 3x5" index card
  • a stapler
First grab a bunch of paper from your writing pad, and put it on top of the index card:

Next, fold everything in half:

Add a couple of staples along the fold:

And voila, you have a mini Moleskine-like notebook that you can stick in your jacket or wallet. I like to write the date in front – since these cost essentially 0 cents to make, I end up making a lot of them over the course of a year. Enjoy!

Here is a craft you can make using a blue plastic solo cup:

Ascension of Jesus Craft from Oriental Trading Company.

catholicicing.com- Ascension of Jesus Craft for Kids

Lacy adapted this craft to suit her needs and also provides us with a printable Jesus to disappear into the clouds.

*I printed out Lacy's Jesus (I made it a little smaller so it would fit inside the cup) and glued it to cardboard. I then cut it out for the students and put a hole in the top to string yarn through prior to class. I also put a hole in the bottom of all the cups for the yarn to be pulled through. During class the students colored Jesus and glued cotton balls on the blue Solo cup for clouds. I attached Jesus to the yarn and helped the students string the yarn through the cup and tied a big knot on the end so it would not fall out.
